{"id":386,"date":"2015-12-08T11:24:39","date_gmt":"2015-12-08T11:24:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/playthinklearn.net\/?page_id=386"},"modified":"2026-09-27T16:32:43","modified_gmt":"2026-09-27T15:32:43","slug":"projects","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/playthinklearn.net\/blog\/projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am currently leading on a three-year ESRC-funded project on Researching the Effectiveness of Playful Learning in Higher Education (<a href=\"https:\/\/research.northumbria.ac.uk\/replay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RE:PLAY<\/a>), which aims to provide an evidence-based for eight different types of play, involving six collaborating universities, another six partners, and 72 RE:PLAY Fellows at institutions across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some previous projects: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/eduscapes.playthinklearn.net\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/eduscapes.playthinklearn.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EduScapes<\/a> involved working with sixth form pupils over three years to design and implement escape rooms, learning how to fail through game design. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk\/projects-and-evaluation\/projects\/engaging-the-brains-reward-system\">Sci-napse: Engaging the Brain\u2019s Reward System<\/a> evaluated whether the use of quizzes with uncertain rewards raise attainment for students studying science. Spoiler, they don&#8217;t. Turns out that implementing a randomized control trial in over 40 schools is really messy. Who knew.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/repository.mmu.ac.uk\/articles\/journal_contribution\/Understanding_Learner_Disengagement_Why_do_students_pay_9_000\/32448099?file=65011362\">Exploring Learner Disengagement<\/a> interviewed 47 students about why they chose not to attend lectures. In short, lectures are boring and students are busy (doing things like working) and prioritize assessments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/gambaloa.wordpress.com\/2011\/12\/15\/gambaloa\/\" target=\"_blank\">Game-Based Learning for Older Adults<\/a> (gambaloa) was an EU-funded network with a funky acronym that explored good practice and research in the potential of game-based learning to improve well-being, health and learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/argosi.playthinklearn.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alternate Reality Games for Orientation, Socialisation and Induction<\/a> (ARGOSI) was a JISC-funded project that aimed to investigate the potential of alternate reality games for supporting student induction and information literacy.
