{"id":10,"date":"2007-10-26T09:17:34","date_gmt":"2007-10-26T08:17:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/playthinklearn.net\/?p=10"},"modified":"2008-06-27T10:39:57","modified_gmt":"2008-06-27T10:39:57","slug":"ecgbl","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/playthinklearn.net\/blog\/ecgbl\/","title":{"rendered":"ECGBL"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.academic-conferences.org\/ecgbl\/ecgbl2007\/ecgbl07-home.htm\" target=\"_blank\">European Conference on Game-Based Learning<\/a>, in Paisley, it&#8217;s the end of day one, so where better to start this blog? It&#8217;s been a really hectic day, with a lot of really interesting stuff. The highlight for me though, has to be the final keynote by <a href=\"http:\/\/website.education.wisc.edu\/steinkuehler\/\" target=\"_blank\">Constance Steinkuehler<\/a>, who spoke about her ethnographic work with virtual communities on World of Warcraft. She highlighted five ways in which virtual collaborative worlds like this can support learning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>collaborative problem solving;<\/li>\n<li>digital literacy;<\/li>\n<li>scientific habits of mind;<\/li>\n<li>computational literacy;<\/li>\n<li>mechanisms for learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Personally, I really appreciated the focus on skills rather than content, and I particularly liked Constance&#8217;s answer when asked about where she thought games could be used to teach content: &#8220;Do I believe games can be used to teach content? Yes. Is it what I&#8217;m interested in studying? No. &#8221; Indeed.<\/p>\n<p>I was also interested in Kurt Squire&#8217;s definition of the three characteristics of game-based learning: a) simulation; b) user-generated content (participatory media); and c) aesthetics of experience, i.e. the expereince of being an expert.
