{"id":185,"date":"2010-06-29T07:34:32","date_gmt":"2010-06-29T07:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/playthinklearn.net\/?p=185"},"modified":"2010-06-29T07:34:32","modified_gmt":"2010-06-29T07:34:32","slug":"game-building","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/playthinklearn.net\/blog\/game-building\/","title":{"rendered":"Game building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I coming to the conclusion that &#8216;learners as game builders&#8217; is a better model for game-based learning that &#8216;learners as game consumers&#8217;, and a couple of cool game-building tools have recently come to my attention.<\/p>\n<p>The first is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yoyogames.com\/make\" target=\"_blank\">Game Maker<\/a>. It&#8217;s a free (or $25 for the Pro version) development kit designed for making all sorts of games. I&#8217;ve not had as long as I&#8217;d have liked to play with it but it seems pretty intuitive, easy to get starter, and you don&#8217;t need a programming background (though I&#8217;m sure it helps). I can also recommend Jake Habgood&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Game-Makers-Apprentice-Development-Beginners\/dp\/1590596153\" target=\"_blank\">The Game Maker&#8217;s Apprentice<\/a> as a good starting point.<\/p>\n<p>The second is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vassalengine.org\/community\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">VASSAL Game Engine<\/a> (thanks to Ian Smith for pointing this out to me), a free game development tool for building online adaptations of board and card games.
