{"id":95,"date":"2008-06-25T09:00:58","date_gmt":"2008-06-25T09:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/playthinklearn.net\/?p=95"},"modified":"2008-06-27T11:20:54","modified_gmt":"2008-06-27T11:20:54","slug":"considering-the-formal-and-informal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/playthinklearn.net\/blog\/considering-the-formal-and-informal\/","title":{"rendered":"Considering the formal and informal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Read a really <a href=\"http:\/\/ubernoggin.com\/archives\/195\" target=\"_blank\">interesting post<\/a> on formal and informal learning and the impact of social networks on <a href=\"http:\/\/ubernoggin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Robbins<\/a>&#8216; blog.<\/p>\n<p>The slideshow is well worth a view, particularly the exploration of the differences between what university education and social networks provide, and new conceptions of the role of the teacher in Higher Education:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>teaching students to learn in an information economy;<\/li>\n<li>guiding students to shape their own paths;<\/li>\n<li>enabling students to access professional networks;<\/li>\n<li>modelling lifelong learning practices;<\/li>\n<li>relating as a more experienced community member.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I wholeheartedly agree with Sarah&#8217;s analysis, but feel &#8211; from my experience with both university staff  &#8211; that we are still a long way away from this being an accepted model. I think that true teacher commitment to this paradigm is essential for its success &#8211; but this re-framing of role and loss of control clearly isn&#8217;t easy.
