So, I’ve finally got a spare moment to sit down and write. I’ve been away twice in the last ten days to two different – and equally awesome events.
First, I was presenting at the Society for Research in Higher Education (SRHE) conference at a lovely (if rather troublingly opulent) spa resort in south Wales. The people I met were friendly, the papers I saw were generally of good quality and well-presented. There was wine. What more do you want in a conference?
I presented with the wonderful Rikke Toft Nørgård and Claus Toft-Nielsen from Aarhus University on Playful Teaching between Freedom and Control: Exploring the Magic Circle in Higher Education. Our paper and slides are both available online.
Earlier this week I attended the Make and Do Escape Room Camp organised by the equally wonderful Andy Walsh, which provided the rare opportunity to take two days out with like-minded people and actually make stuff. I came away buzzing with ideas and enthusiasm. This the sort of creative space – magic circle – that we really need to make more effort to build into academic practice. My resolution for 2017 is definitely to make sure I build this sort of play space into my working practice every month (the easy bit) – and I will not cancel it or feel guilty about it (the hard bit).
